ACT AFLM Women's History

In 2015, Pam Andrew advocated for women's inclusion in the AFL Masters competition, leading to the first Women's competition at the National Carnival in 2016

A 3 team 4-day competition between Victoria, NSW & QLD was included in 2016. Pam was the sole ACT representative at the carnival and captained the first Victorian team that was made up of players from Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Northern Territory and ACT.

In March 2017 Pam Andrew was appointed to the National Board as the National Women’s Director.  In 2017,

8 women’s teams registering for the carnival in Geelong.

ACT was again represented by Pam Andrew at the Coffs Harbour 2018 carnival playing for Tasmania.  She was awarded the Tasmanian women’s team Best and Fairest and won an All-Australian medal.

In 2019, in her continuing role as National Women’s Director, Pam Andrew organised an AFLM Over 40’s exhibition match as a curtain raiser for the AFLW International Women’s Day double header held at Marvel Stadium.

This game was played in March 2019, and for the first time Pam was joined by two other female ACT representatives at an AFLM event.  Pam Andrew, Andi McGee & Brooke Murphy all played for the winning VIC County team in this game.

The ACT women’s combined with representatives from Vic Country, Vic Metro, South Australia & NSW for the 2020 carnival.

In 2022 Andi McGee ACT Development Coordinator initiated a successful Quickkick program from May – August, providing upwards of 80 ACT over 35 women with the opportunity to play AFL for the first time.

This culminated in the first two women’s local matches being played as part of the ACT Men’s Heart Mind and Soul Cup fixtures.  These matches included a combination of experienced and new players who joined up to play 2 x 12 a side matches between the Soul Sisters and Bleeding Hearts.

The ACT AFL Masters made a breakthrough in recruiting players for a National Carnival and fielded the first ACT Women’s team in the Over 35’s division in Adelaide. There are now over 300 Women participating in the National Carnival each year, forming an increasing percentage of the players.
