What a great way to bring the 2019 AFL Masters Season to a close,by finally knocking off the Mildcats in what I could only describe as our best team effort of the year.
But before I get into the game, l’d like to wish the best to the handful of ACT Masters Footballers headed north to Townsville, and I’m sure we all wish them the best for the carnival.
As for Sunday’s game, cant say enough just how impressed I was by the overall team effort that we put in. From the first bounce when we were kicking against a 3 goal breeze, we moved the ball well and our endeavour to conduct pressure acts causing turnovers saw us go into the quarter time break with a handy lead.
The midfield was dominant, with Kyro and Lucky fighting hard at ground level, complimented by Moose who had a welcomed return to form. But I think Sharky in the ruck was the standout for me as he battled against a much bigger opponent, often being buffeted out of the contest, who epitomised the “never give up” attitude of the whole team displayed throughout the game.
The second quarter saw us kicking with the wind, and with Gezza not being paid any respect in the goal square we slammed on three quick goals. With Tuanny running around the forward line like an energiser bunny, and Adam and Manny providing plenty of run from both of the wings, it was definitely one of our most convincing quarters of the year. But the player of the quarter for me was Al, who was in everything and got more football than Scot Pendlebury.
Our efforts in the third quarter were just as impressive, as we once again kicked into a fairly stiff breeze. The back-line continued to provide the bounce and energy to turn defence into attack, with BG and Tommy showing how important second and third efforts are in a game of footy.
While the back six were resolute, the run and carry of the midfield and the delivery into the forward line kept the pressure up and we managed to maintain our lead heading into the last quarter. Fred kept providing an option up forward also, moving well, and the delivery to him was spot on.
Unfortunately we lost Tommy just before the third quarter break, when he received the best body slam since Andre the Giant flipped Hulk Hogan to the canvas in a true WWE fashion.
The last quarter started with a mini fightback by the Mildcats, but after Rohan had his usual nap on the field and Kyro pulled up lame, Pearl made the sensible call and we headed for the sheds and Marbles Bar before anymore injuries were sustained.
All in all it was a great day out, but we should say thanks both Gaz and Locko for doing a great job of umpiring on the day. Without you two we wouldn’t have a game. It was also good to see some support on the sideline, with Ryno helping out on the bench and the Prez doing a sterling job behind the BBQ. It was also good to have Marbles back post his hysterectomy, definitely not as funny as he once was.
While that was our last official game for 2019, summer series football will start up again in November, so stay turned on Team App for updates. I’ve also heard a rumour that Friday 01 Nov will be our presentation dinner at Eastlakes football Club in Kingston, but I’m sure the Prez will update us all shortly.
As such, I’d just like to thank you all for your time and efforts this year, and I am looking forward to season 2020.
