Report on National Carnival, Maroochydore, QLD
We finished the carnival on a real high yesterday winning the 35+ division 2 competition with a 12 goals to 6 win over SA. It was great to finally get a win over SA who had thwarted our championship ambitions in 2005 (45’s), 2006 (35’s at Maroochydoore), and 2009 at Cairns on goal difference (40’s). This is our 3rd championship in the past 5 years.
We started the 35’s competition with our backs to the wall in the first game on Sunday last week as NT kicked the 1st 3 goals and we struggled to get our hands on the ball and everyone except Tuanny struggled to come to terms with the heat. A key move was putting Smurf on the opposition go to man and he shut him down (this guy won the best and fairest for the 35’s but did not get a kick on Smurf). Scores were level 5 minutes into the last Q but we kicked the last 3 goals to finish with a comfortable win in the end.
Daniel Tuan was brilliant with 4 goals and a BOG performance. Other good players were Rhino, Simon Tuan, Peter Taylor and Leitchy.
Meanwhile SA trounced TAS 99 to 1. They looked huge and very impressive.
In the second game we played TAS and hit our straps from the 1st bounce with a 7 goal opening term. We ended up winning 129 points to 0, including a huge drop kick goal by shorty. Arguably ACT biggest ever win.
Best players were Andre (shorty), Simon Tuan, Daniel Tuan, Stewie, Dawso, and Frommy. Sadly Dazzla hurt his knee and was finished for the carnival.
The final was against SA. They opened with the 1st 2 goals against the wind and hit us hard with big bodies. We steadied with 2 goals to Dawso from great individual efforts. SA kicked the 1st 2 goals with the wind in the 2nd and looked to be set to go away with it. The ACT defence dug deep and repelled many attacks. We then kicked the next two goals to even up the scores at half time. One of those goals was arguably the best goal ACT has kicked. It started deep in the back pocket on the defensive side of the ground with Gaters involved in a chain of handballs which ended with Skutafeidies who kicked a 50m bomb into the wind right on the siren. The momentum was with the ACT. In the 3rd term we absolutely blitzed SA with 5 goals to zip. Our attack on the footy was brilliant as we won the contested ball and gang tackled the opposition and gave them nothing. SA came out hard in the final Q and kicked 2 goals in 2 minutes. Momentarily we looked in trouble but we steadied and kicked the last 3 goals into the wind to run out comfortable winners.
Best players were Simon Tuan, Frommy, Shorty, Dawso, Leitchy and Gaters. Smurf was excellent in shutting down the gun SA player. Stewie tore a groin early in the game trying to out-muscle a giant SA player.
Smurf believes that the stacks on the mill training we completed in an after party on Weds night was a key plank in our strategy for all out attack on the ball.
In the 45’s we were always going to struggle with 13 players on the list and playing in Div 1. In each game we built a side minutes before the bounce. In the 1st game we got beaten easily by QLD after being in with a chance to half time. Best players were Hoggy, Staina, Hoef, Skutey and Keith Edwards from WA. We played TAS in game 2 and put together a much better effort losing by 4 goals but we could have easily been 2 or 3 goals closer. Best players were Skutey, Staina, Keith, Lincoln, and Boots. Unfortunately, Lincoln tore a quad in the sprints straight after our game and his carnival was over. In game 3 we were up against Vic Metro who had beaten TAS. They came out full of wind saying they were going to beat us by 16 goals. We had an excellent game and should have won it but eventually lost by 4 points.
Best players were Skutey, Staina, Keith, Hoef, Sporty and Jock. Macca pulled up sore with a crook knee and Yappa battled a sore back all week.
The 3 WA boys: Sporty, Keith and Boots were great additions to our side. They were excellent footy players and great guys and we would be proud to have them play with us anytime.
The 55’s also had a tough carnival as they combined with NSW. The ACT had 7 players and 5 players from WA. The 1st game was against Vic Metro. Our boys were competitive up to half time but fell away in the second half. Best players were Bodsy (had a blinder), Colesy (WA), Bear (WA), Robbie Edwards, and Bruno. A real highlight for me was a chase and tackle by Robbie Edwards and dumped his opponent in a brilliant display of raw aggression. Unfortunately, Robbie’s ankle was no good and he was unable to finished the carnival. The 2nd game was against SA who were red hot. How the hell they are in 2nd division I will never know. The SA side would have beaten most 50’s sides and a few 45’s. Best players were Colesy, bear, Bruno and bodsy. The final game was against QLD. Our boys put up a great effort losing 11 goals to 3.
Best players were Colesy, Bear, Gauntie and Bruno. The WA boys were all fantastic players and great blokes. I really hope we get to play with them again. It was great to see one of our favourite sons, Midnight get through the carnival without injury after a few difficult years.
All Australian honours:
35’s: Simon Tuan, Daniel Tuan and Justin Fromm with Hoef as Assistant Coach. Andre (shorty) was very unlucky not to be awarded an all Australian as was Leitchy, Smurf and Dawso. Normally the winning side has 5 or 6 players awarded but this year they combined div 1 and div 2 together and limited the spots. The best and fairest should have gone to one of the Tuanny boys.
45’s: Staina and Keith. David Skuta was very unlucky not to be included.
55’s: Colesy and Bodsy.
Many thanks to our team managers: bobby (chef de mission), Frommy and Hoggy who did a brilliant job. Our president, Crusty, was all over all of the details and ran a great show. His dedication and efforts are truly amazing, including attending an all day delegates meeting on the Thursday whilst lesser men nursed hangovers and hung around the pool or the beach.
Thanks also to Yappa who coached the 55’s (this was a difficult task as the NSW playing group had some ordinary people), Dawso and Tuanny (Simon) who helped coached the 45’s, and Yappa again for helping with the coaching in the final with the 35’s.
Great effort again by Crowey who provided the umpiring services for the ACT along with Johnny Atoli.
A real highlight was our team dinner. We had 75 players and families at Lefty’s restaurant in Hawaiian shirts and a couple of tarts (staina, dawso, and chinny) in stunning floral numbers.
The ethics committee was called into action with a formal complaint from the hotel management – it was alleged that men were heard singing ‘bound for glory’ at 3.30am and generally disturbing the peace.
This is my final duty as coach. The past two years as coach of the ACT AFL Masters has been a pleasure and a privilege and I am confident that the unofficially anointed successor (gaters) will do a brilliant job in 2012.
Next year is in Townsville. I can’t wait. Pengy has offered his place to all players and families as a great party venue with a spa and he is contemplating putting in a pool for the convenience of players.
